Workshop: Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative
DestinE is part of the European Strategy for Data and the Green Deal. Its objective is to develop a dynamic, interactive, computing and data intensive “Digital Twin of the Earth”: a digital, multi-dimensional replica of the Earth system, which would enable different user groups (public, scientific, private) to interact with the vast amounts of natural and socio-economic information.
DestinE would build on the flexible and convergent use of data, infrastructure (incl. HPC), software and AI applications/analytics supported by a strong horizontal framework (incl. EU data and digital governance provisions) to:
- Offer a federated, cloud-based core platform providing users with access to data and infrastructure, enabling them to build applications on top of it and to integrate their own data, thus forming the enabling core of a European earth observation, geospatial data and earth systems’ applications ecosystem (Green Deal Data Space);
- Develop a number of thematic Digital Twins (DTs) in priority EU policy areas (e.g. environment, climate, security, health) giving users easy access to thematic information, services, models, scenarios, forecasts, visualisations etc.
Workshop
This workshop will offer an opportunityto hear and give feedback on one of the first DT to be developed in DestinE, the DT on Climate Change Adaptation. This DT will provide capabilities and services in support of climate adaptation policies and mitigation scenario testing at decadal timescales with unprecedented reliability at regional and national levels. The inclusion of socio-economic feedback will allow leveraging the societal influence.
The workshop will include an initial overview of DestinE and of the functionalities and performance criteria expected by such a DT and will be followed by three parallel sessions to discuss the basic DT concept from three different viewpoints: policy usage, science and technology challenges, and quality assessment.
Registration
Details of the agenda, background paper and how to connect to the event will be sent after registration on https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-market/events/cf/destine-digital-twin-on-weather-induced-and-geophysical-extremes/register.cfm
Registration will open on the 8th October and close on the 20th.
